Sweep Those Irons

Golf has often been described as a game of opposites. To make the ball rise "up" into the air, we are told to hit "down" on the ball.
This advice, while partially true, can sometimes be dangerous, causing sore wrists and hands.

Hitting down too steeply on the ball can cause divots that are too deep and shots that are either fat or thin. Rather than thinking "down", perhaps a better swing thought would be the "brush" the ground under the ball. In this way, the bottom edge of the iron would be just below the level of the ball for most normal lies.

New golfers, especially juniors, revel in their ability to get the ball airborne. This is a sign of early success.

For most iron shots, play the ball near the middle of the stance, slightly left of center (for righthanders) for longer clubs. Then work on brushing the ground directly under the ball. Not a scooping action, but a sweeping-type stroke. The resulting divots should be shallow, not deep. This kind of swing will put sufficient backspin on the ball to get it in the air, and cause it to check upon landing, thereby allowing you to better control the ball.
